Between your annual professional portraits, you have moments in your everyday life that you will want to remember. These ten tips will help you get the best results from your most convenient camera, hint: your smartphone. Most selfies are spur of the moment ( like the one below of my daughter's first day of preschool). Especially with active kids, act fast and take the picture regardless because it may be tricky to recreate if you don't act quickly.
Enjoy!
- 1. Hold your phone up and tilt down: phones have a wide-angle lens that can distort the subject.
- 2. Find clean light: go next to a window or an area outside that is not in direct sunlight. (Super easy here in the Pacific Northwest, right?!)
- 3. Use a selfie stick: You can set the focus of the image to your face instead of your arm by extending the reach. Your face should catch your attention first.
- 4. Show your genuine smile! Half grinning, or even no smile, will increase the expression's “fake” look. Think of something funny and snap a picture.
- 5. Turtle your chin: This means sticking your chin out to give your chin and neck more definition.
- 6. Don't take it yourself: Ask a friend or someone nearby to take the picture. By the way, this is often better than a selfie stick.
- 7. Know your good side: okay, quickly grab a mirror and smile. Pay attention to your eyes, nose, and corners of your mouth. Which side is more creased? Which side of your nose and mouth is slightly upturned more than the other? That is your good side because it's more expressive than your other side.
- 8. Wear your favorite colored shirt: Pick a shirt that makes you feel your best. Now not something that will make your social media page look good but something that shows your personality.
- 9. Watch your background. Messy house? No problem, find a blank wall or photograph from above, and you look up. Or go outside and avoid the inside altogether.
- 10. Last but not least, try the portrait feature on your phone. Many smartphones have a portrait function which can be an immediate benefit.
